THE SOUTH PACIFIC SPANS from Australia to America’s West Coast. Crossing it in a yacht requires considerable planning, but those who venture into this region on a superyacht will discover a part of earth unlike any other. Untouched by worldly worries, the Pacific islands are the pearls of the South Seas, cradled in the shell of the world’s greatest ocean.
Despite its vast size, the South Pacific is dotted with thousands of islands, from New Zealand in the west to French Polynesia in the east. Just as a stone can be skipped across the water, so too your yacht can hop from island to island across the magnificent breadth of the Pacific – and The Great Southern Route serves to guide you every part of the voyage.
The South Pacific destinations covered here are New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Wallis and Futuna Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Niue, Samoa, American Samoa, Tokelau, Cook Islands, French Polynesia – including the Society Islands (Tahiti, Bora Bora and Moorea), Tuamotu Atolls and Marquesas Islands – as well as the Galapagos, Pitcairn, and Easter Islands to the far east.
The North Pacific is also covered, including Palau, Micronesia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Hawaii. For the most adventurous of souls, due south lies the spectacular white wastes and teeming wildlife colonies of Antarctica.
But for the true flavour of the South Seas, take the advice from one captain to another and don’t miss Tahiti.
Whatever you have read, seen or can imagine about French Polynesia, the real thing is better. For many, it is the only destination that outperforms the brochure.
A lifetime of adventure awaits in these happy, sunny isles. As the locals say: Welcome, Halo olketa, Bonjour, Bula, Halo Olketta, Malo e lei lei, Talofa, Talofa Lava, Kia Orana and Ia Orana.
