HONG KONG’S NEWEST MARINA, Lantau Marina Club, has welcomed its first vessels, 45-foot Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 479 and the Ferretti Yachts 670. A redevelopment of the Discovery Bay Marina Club, the 148-berth marina accommodates vessels from 10 metres to 100 metres on the northeastern coastline of Lantau Island. While the marina is now open and welcoming guests, both the clubhouse and land-based redevelopment are still ongoing.
A project not without controversy, the marina and private members club, which had been operating since 1989, closed in early 2019 for redevelopment dividing the local boating community. Lantau Marina Club has been driven by Mr Victor Cha, Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of HKR International Limited, a shareholder of the developer and operator known for their high-end residential property developments in Asia.
The marina is catering to a new guard of yacht owners offering fibre optic internet as well as dockside phone and TV access.
There is a helipad on site and a variety of shore supports for owners and crew. It is a private members club and the majority of yachts in the marina will be those of its members. However, berths will be set aside for international yachts as well as a safe harbour for local vessels as Lantau Marina Club is a typhoon shelter.
The tropical storms can roll through Hong Kong from May to November, although typically in July through September.
Lantau Island is perhaps best known as the location of Hong Kong’s International Airport, Chep Lap Kok, which is just 20 minutes from the marina. It is also where yacht crew will find Disneyland and Discovery Bay Golf Club. Lantau is much larger than Hong Kong island and lies to the west with easy road and ferry access.
Hong Kong is currently open to foreign-flagged superyachts. All crew and guests who enter Hong Kong will need to quarantine on board for 14 days and return a negative test before being released ashore.
