Fact file: Alaska

Alaska is a US state in the extreme north-west of the North American continent, separated from Washington State by the Canadian Yukon Territory and British Columbia.

TO THE SOUTH is the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean; to the west is the Bering Sea and the Chukchi Sea; and to the north lies the Beaufort Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Alaska is the largest state by area and also one of the wealthiest and most racially diverse. It has more coastline than all the other US states combined, with nearly 54,720 kilometres (34,000 miles) of tidal shoreline.

South Central Alaska is the southern coastal region and houses most of the state’s population in towns such as Anchorage, Palmer, and Wasilla. South-west Alaska includes western Cook Inlet, Bristol Bay, the Alaska Peninsula, and the volcanic Aleutian Islands, as well as the stunning Katmai and Lake Clark national parks.

Visitors will find majestic landscapes of mountains, tundra and lakes, as well as brown bears, caribou, salmon, whales and countless birds.

The Inside Passage, which links Puget Sound in Washington State to Alaska, is America’s ultimate cruising destination. Superyachts often visit Alaska for the short summer season, either by taking the inside route or making an offshore detour via the Hawaiian Islands. Note that there is a strict requirement for foreign superyachts to employ a pilot.

Commercial or marina berths for large yachts can be found in Ketchikan, Juneau, and Sitka, where the O’Connell Bridge facility offers two superyacht docks up to 180 feet in length.
