THE MALDIVES is an island nation consisting of a group of atolls in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives are located south of India’s Lakshadweep islands, and about 700 km (435 miles) SW of Sri Lanka. The 26 atolls encompass a territory featuring 1,192 islets, roughly two hundred of which are inhabited by local communities. Islands housing just hotels, antennae, fuel tanks, and other such premises are not counted as inhabited islands by the administration.
The Maldives holds the record for being the flattest country in the world, with a maximum natural ground level of only 2.3m (71/2 ft), though in areas where construction exists this has been increased to several metres. Over the last century, sea levels have risen about twenty centimetres (8 in). The ocean is likely to continue rising due to global warming and this threatens the existence of the Maldives.
The Maldives has been a very popular superyacht cruising destination for many years and as such has developed a very sound base of service providers who are well experienced in providing the visiting superyachts with everything they need.
